Thing 8 conclusion

We use email to comunicate with staff at all the branches of our district and to inform patrons of their holds and overdue items. It's productive because it's quick and one doesn't need to waste paper. With IM, the communication is in real time and that could save alot of of problems with delays.
I am not a user of texting or IM, but I can see how it can be a very useful tool in today's world.
I have not experienced a Webinar except a recording of a Webinar to learn about Unique Management.

Importing Blog

An expert staff member (who wishes to remain A. Nonymous) helped me to clean up the confusing mess I made with the two blogs I had created. I am hoping to continue with the 23 Things (just finishing with Thing 8) and maybe even catch up, well, maybe not quite catch up, but at least stay in the running!
The unregistered blog was exported (saved on the desktop) and then imported into the registered blog (this one). I will then delete the unregistered blog since I will be posting all new stuff onto the registered one, this one--TDD123.

Thing 8

Webinars can be really useful for meetings and learning new stuff. Still, it's nice to be able to interact with people face to face, call me old-fashioned.

Thing 8

It's a bit sad that, on the one hand all this new technology has made our lives easier, and on the other, we need to use this same technology to connect with each other because we are more and more isolated and away from personal human contact and connection. I guess it's good to be able to communicate quickly with our families and co-workers, esp. since the shared family meal and close interaction with co-workers seem to be happening less and less.

Thing 7

ImageChef Word Mosaic - ImageChef.com

This was easy to do. I can see how some of these tools can be really useful for many things in the library graphic dept.--flyers, posters, programs, etc. What fun!

Spell with Flickr

This simple use of Flikr was not too much fun. It required saving each image on the desktop and then uploading it into the blog post and then moving them around to fit--and they don't really fit very well. It must be because I don't know what to do or how to use the program efficiently. And how to apply this use for Libraries....? I guess there could be a useful application by someone who is adept at using this.

Thing 4

RSS-certainly makes keeping up with current information easier. And can also be tremendously time-consuming. So much out there, it's overwhelming! (Does RSS make things simply "whelming"?)

Thing 3

I prefer Google Blog Search and Blog Pulse for searching blogs. They seem more straight-forward, without alot of distracting stuff. They came up with more relevant search results than Technorati and seemed easier to use.

Thing 2

There is so much information, opinions, and thoughts on what Library 2.0 is and how important it is that we all keep up with the ever-changing face of technology and keep (or make) our libraries more relevant and user-friendly. I whole-heartedly agree that libraries are and/or must remain dynamic places for access to information and social interaction within communities. How that happens seems to manifest according to the individual library and the community it serves. For our(newly expanded) medium branch our service to our patronage is evolving, as is our patronage itself.
Learning these 23 things will serve to provide all of us the experience and knowledge that will probably be useful to our patrons in the near future. Right now, many of our patrons are happy if staff will "do all the work" for them and are just beginning to see how being able to navigate in our catalog for finding and placing materials on hold for themselves is actually gratifying (and simple to do.) Yet, being informed and experienced in the current tech way of social networking is certainly beneficial, if not imperative for library staff.

Second Try

I had to create a new email account and new blog because I was away for the past three weeks or so and forgot my username and password (and the little post-it notes just disappeared!) Trying to get that info was quite a circular experience. I just finally gave up.
Now I get to catch up. My co-workers are all way ahead, but that can be a good thing esp. when I need help with any one (or all, most likely) of the 23 things.

Wow! I did it, after a little help from my friends. I can see how this can be a valuable thing to know how to do. And it's a good feeling not to be completely ignorant about this stuff (and I am almost completely so when it comes to this type of social networking.) I plan to keep learning more.
